Yancey County Announces Christmas Tree Recycling and Holiday Schedule

Don't throw away your natural Christmas tree! Yancey County recycling and convenience centers will accept Christmas trees to be recycled. Trees must have all ornaments, tinsel, lights, hooks and wires removed prior to disposal at the center. Residents are encouraged to drop off trees in the designated areas at any of the county's community recycling centers until January 31, 2015. Trees can also be taken to the Yancey-Mitchell Transfer Station off of Highway 80 North.

DO NOT LITTER! If the collection centers are closed, either due to the holiday or inclement weather, do not leave your trash at the gate or enter the facility. You can be issued a citation for littering.

The Burnsville Town Square has been voted as the winner of the  Great Places in NC: Public Places award.

Burnsville is one of the winners of the People's Choice category, in which the favorites were chosen by popular vote in an online contest.

 There are a lot of exciting things going on in Yancey County!

The Yancey County Report issued by the Yancey County Economic Development Commission contains updates on the many projects going on in Yancey County. Included is information about the highway construction project, the broadband project, and other infrastructure improvements. Other initiatives by Yancey County Government, the Town of Burnsville, educational institutions and area businesses are highlighted as well

New Information Regarding North Carolina Voter ID Requirements 


Beginning in 2016, North Carolina will require voters to show a photo identification (photo ID) when they present to vote in person. This change is a result of the Voter Information Verification Act or "VIVA." (S.L. 2013-381).

Your Vehicle Registration Notice is Changing

The North Carolina General Assembly passed a new law to create a combined motor vehicle registration renewal and property tax collection system. In doing so, the new law transfers the responsibility for motor vehicle tax collection from the 100 counties across North Carolina to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Visit and click on "Tag and Tax Together" for more information.

 The New Yancey County GIS Website


The Yancey Mapping Department is now providing a new GIS website to better assist the general public. You will find that this site will be more user friendly, as well as provide proper, updated information relating to all land and tax data within Yancey County. Much of the information like floodplains, address structure points, printable tax cards is still not available due to the early stages of the project. We ask for your patience as we work diligently to provide Yancey County with a more professional, and resourceful website.

Tax Payment Drop Box

For the convenience of Yancey County Taxpayers, the Tax Collections Office has placed a payment drop box near the front entrance of the courthouse at the top of the sidewalk. Directions for drop box payment are posted at the location. Envelopes are provided inside the drop box for payment by check. Please do not deposit cash.
